Many
Scotts Valley residents are second generation dwellers. Others
come from Santa Cruz and larger communities to enjoy good weather,
access to major employment centers, and the joy of a small town
atmosphere.
Scotts
Valley offers a variety of housing options and a corps of competent,
friendly professionals in real estate and related fields to help
home buyers select just the right properties. From luxurious custom
homes, to log cabins and condominiums, to mobile homes, there
is something for almost every taste and need.
Most
of the housing in Scotts Valley is single-family. Housing prices
vary widely and high-end homes have appreciated greatly in recent
years.
The
steady population growth of the past decade has put some strain
on the city's housing stock, but in the past few years several
new dwellings have been built, and there are still a number of
rental units available to accommodate the growing number of residents
moving to Scotts Valley.
The
Scott House
The 1853
Scott House was the home of the namesake of the City of Scotts
Valley, Hiram Scott, who left his ship in Monterey Bay in
1847, settled in Santa Cruz and purchased Rancho San Agustin
for $20,000 in 1850. Scotts Valley is situated on part of
the old ranch site. The Scott house is a fine example of a
Greek Revival country home. The original structure consisted
of four rooms on the ground floor, two unfinished second-floor
rooms, and an attached kitchen as well. The Scott House's
two central fireplaces and off-center stairway constitute
typical features of the Greek Revival style.
The appearance
of the Scott House as it now stands is very near that shown
in the earliest photographs and written accounts of early
day residents.
