October 5 & 6 – 10 AM – 5 PM
MacDorsa Park – One Civic Center Drive, Scotts Valley
The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to be hosting their First Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch in Scotts Valley on October 5th & 6th. This new event will be held at MacDorsa Park on Civic Center Drive, where visitors will find a park FULL of Glass Pumpkins to purchase. “This is a new endeavor for us and we are excited to be working with one of our business members, Chris Johnson of Chris Johnson Glass, to make this happen,” says Chamber Executive Director Sharolynn Ullestad. Glass pumpkins have become a popular item for art lovers, especially in their fall decorating. The park will sparkle with color as guests walk through the park selecting the glass pumpkin of their choice. We will have pumpkin designs made by several different glass artists to choose from.
Our Event Coordinator, Chris Johnson, has been creating glass art for 15 years and has located his studio Chris Johnson Glass in Santa Cruz County for the last seven years. He got his introduction to glass at the Renaissance Pleasure Fare in 1991 and started his career in glass in 1999. He apprenticed himself to Arturo Ramos of J. Fine Glass, worked as the studio technician at Bay Area Glass Institute (BAGI) and then as the studio Manager at The California College of Arts and Crafts. In 2007 he built his first studio in Santa Cruz. “I love glass. It is such an incredibly versatile medium,” says Chris.
Chris started creating pumpkins in 2000 for BAGI under the leadership of Bobby Bowes now of Walker and Bowes. Pumpkins have been made by glass artists for centuries. Chris saw a pumpkin made in 1470 in the “Museo de Vietro” in Venice Italy. “It has always amazed me how versatile the pumpkin is, and how many different styles and designs there are that individual artists can express through the one form,” says Chris.
The creation of a pumpkin requires a skilled team of artists working in concert. Timing and precision of the team is paramount. Each step of the process must be matched to the movement of the other team members so that all of the parts come together at the end. “Glass is a fluid medium, always in motion; every artist has to be in sync with the
others so that pumpkin and stem are married at just the correct moment to create the finished object. Music helps.” Over the course of the years Chris has perfected not only his style of pumpkin, but his esthetic. “I want a pumpkin that is original and pleasing to the eye,” shares Chris, “and I want each to be unique.” Though it is possible to repeat designs Chris rarely does. “The idea of making a run of 50 identical pieces is anathema to me.” So he makes a conscious effort to make each one different.
Chris Johnson will be coordinating with several different area glass artists to bring a fantastic variety of glass pumpkins to our Scotts Valley Glass Pumpkin Patch. There will be glass pumpkins of all sizes, colors and designs. The green grass of MacDorsa park will reflect a sea of color as it serves as the backdrop for these gorgeous pumpkins. Come enjoy a day of Glass Pumpkin shopping in Scotts Valley!

Watch Here for News About out NEXT Travel Adventure
March 13th at 4:00am our group of Ireland Travelers met in the Hilton Lobby and boarded our shuttle to the airport to begin a ten day adventure we will never forget. From San Francisco airport we headed to Shannon, Ireland and discovered the Emerald Isle. Ireland truly has the most beautifully green countryside. Our home for the trip was Adare Manor Resort and Golf Club. This 5-star resort was incredibly beautiful. Although we stayed in beautifully appointed, modern villas, we were mesmerized by the Adare Manor Castle which was the focus of the Resort. The beauty of the Manor Castle both inside and out was worth the trip. We enjoyed a beautiful St. Patrick’s Day evening dinner at the Manor Clubhouse and enjoyed the Irish music in the Tack Room located in the Cellar of the Manor after dinner. In fact, several of us learned to dance an Irish dance taught to us by the musicians of the evening. We became the Scotts Valley Ireland Family and had such a wonderful time together. That’s the thing about Scotts Valley – we’re a family even when on foreign soil.
Our travels took us to the Cliffs of Mohr where we climbed to the top of O’Brien’s Tower , Galway City, Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny Castle, Dingle Peninsula, Blarney and the legendary Blarney Stone where, yes, our own Mayor Lind kissed the Blarney Stone. We enjoyed the St Patricks Day festivities and parade in Limerick where we found our lovely “green”
mementos. We had organized our trip so that each day we returned to our lovely villas to relax, sleep in the same bed each night and get ready for the next day of Adventure. The lovely town of Adare was very quaint and the gracious business community welcomed us.
One of the most enjoyable evenings was spent in Bunratty Castle where Lord and Lady Pursley reigned over the Medieval Festivities of the evening. Our own Paul and Joann Pursley were selected as royalty for the evening and their Scotts Valley fellow travelers got to sit at the head table as members of their court. What a fabulous evening of food and entertainment inside the Bunratty Castle.
For our last two days in Ireland we packed up our suitcases, bid farewell to Adare, and headed out for the bustling City of Dublin – a stark contrast to the quiet little village of Adare. But we adapted quickly and jumped on the Hop-on-Hop-off open top buses and toured the City. Some of us even made it out to the Irish Presidential home which was designed by the same architect as our Washington White House and looks much the same. In the evening we enjoyed the wonderful Irish music together as we participated in the Dublin Pub Crawl of the Temple Bar District.
All in All it was an Incredible Adventure!! Bunratty Castle’s Lady Joann summed it up for us all, “We had a wonderful time!! We would do it again in a minute. We traveled with some mighty fine folks. Thanks for the good times!!!!!” Our Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to have been able to sponsor this fantastic trip and we look forward to our Next Great Adventure!!
